Jhon Lloyd Jones Fermin (b. 2002, Philippines) is an emerging self-taught Filipino artist based in a small town in Mindanao, specializing in charcoal and graphite. His work is defined by highly detailed, time-intensive drawings that carve realism from raw texture, transforming loose marks and shifting tones into lifelike forms through light, shadow, and precision.

He began drawing during the pandemic with no formal training, using only basic materials and curiosity. Through online communities and observation, he developed his skills independently, gradually building a foundation in realism through portrait commissions. An early setback—facing harsh criticism from a client—led him to briefly abandon his work, even destroying his early drawings. That experience, however, became a turning point, shaping the discipline and resilience that now define his practice.

Raised with limited access to opportunities, Fermin used time and constraint as an advantage, allowing him to fully commit to the slow and demanding process his work requires. Each piece often takes months to complete, built layer by layer with precision and intent.

His artistic direction has since evolved beyond likeness into highly detailed compositions that carve realism from raw texture, inspired by historical artworks, photographs, biblical narratives, as well as classical sculptures and carvings. He is currently developing a body of work centered on these themes, with the aim of creating pieces that communicate their story at a glance while revealing intentional strokes and layered details that hold deeper meaning upon closer observation.

Alongside his studio practice, Fermin shares his process through short-form videos, documenting the progression of each artwork from start to finish. His content has reached millions of viewers across platforms, allowing audiences to engage not only with the final piece, but with the time, effort, and story behind its creation.

In addition to his personal body of work, he accepts commissioned drawings from personal photographs, translating individual moments into detailed, hand-crafted pieces that support and sustain his broader artistic practice.
